This movie was a lot better than I initially expected. I was stuck watching it with my 8 year ancient (for whom it was a gift) one day when I was running on the treadmill. I was surprised to collect some inviting concepts about the nature of time, multiple dimentions, and heaven and hell mixed with issues around teamwork, friendship, and the understanding that advantageous and dreadful can exist in the same person at once. My son loved it and watches it regularly.

This is a review of the quality of the Planet of the Apes [Blu-ray. The video looks friendly for a film as musty as this, but is not even finish to comely. The high def transfer in some cases actually serves to accentuate problems you might not have noticed otherwise. I saw more than a few soft scenes where they looked unfocused. Grain was never too obtrusive, but the colors were uneven through a splendid piece of the film. Some scenes were rich and shining, and others washed out. My biggest spot is the sound. They exhibit the sound here as a DTS 5.1 mix, and a mono mix. I chose DTS and was sorely dissapointed. My subwoofer never kicked on. That means that there was never an instance when there was a frequency lower than about 85hz. This made for a very shallow sounding mix. Adding to that, the surround speakers never seemed to register anything, and you’ve got what sounded to me like a mono mix anyway. All of the sound seemed to near from my center channel. To me, digitally remastering a film soundtrack at this level means accentuating the lower registries by adding lower frequencies, and placing atmospheric and musical elements in the surround channels. If you don’t conception on doing that, what’s the exercise of calling it a DTS 5.1 mix? Anyway, this is by far the best transfer I’ve ever seen of the film, but don’t be looking for anything more than a slightly better than average transfer, and a glorified mono track.

I recently watched this novel version of “The Planet of the Apes” for the first time since seeing it at a drive-in theater serve in 1968. First I was amazed at how remarkable of the film I had forgotten. Actually, most of what I remembered was the (then) hideous ending. What I was impressed with this time around was what an incandescent and well-scripted film this was (and level-headed is) . Like any splendid science fiction, this film provides an lively commentary on the human condition. One the one hand you have the Minister of Science and Defender of the Faith debunking and destroying an archeological dig, because it is contrary to the faith of the Apes, but on the other hand in his reading from the sacred scrolls you hear the correct description of the destructive (dare I say “unsuitable? “) nature of humans. I’ve been pondering this segment of the film quite a bit over the past few days. Like others, I contemplate Charlton Heston is in magnificent get here. It’s easy to record him as president of the National Rifle Association after seeing this film. I serene occupy Heston in “Ben Hur” and “the Ten Commandments,” but that probably reflects my personal interest in the stories that are told there. As one Academy Award film-maker recently said upon receiving his lifetime achievement Oscar (I believe it was Norman Jewison), “Come By a fable that needs to be told and utter it.” This version of “The Planet of the Apes” certainly tells a superb narrative, and tells it well.

For years I had heard very important summaries of this 1970 version of the classic narrative of Frankenstein and the monster he creates out of stolen human body parts. Hammer Studios, long distinguished for their revivals of classic Universal Anxiety stories had their first titanic success with their 1956 version of the faded Mary Shelley current “Frankenstein”, which they titled “The Curse of Frankenstein”. Starring Peter Cushing as Baron Frankenstein and Christopher Lee as the Monster, this film provided the basis for a semi regular series over more than a decade of stories continuing Baron Frankenstein’s experiments in creating human life. Peter Cushing went on to play the role 6 times and became forever associated with the role of the enraged scientist experimenting with the very essence of life. For this version filmed in 1970 however Hammer decided to go encourage to the roots of the Frankenstein narrative and they cast up and coming actor Ralph Bates in the role of Victor Frankenstein. Distinguished criticism was leveled at this casting decision as Peter Cushing had of course set aside his indelible label on the character over many years. In fact however it made sense as “Anxiety of Frankenstein”, goes benefit to the Baron’s school days before he began his experiments. Peter Cushing, for all his titanic expertise in playing the role was simply too broken-down in 1970 to play the earlier scenes in this particular version. To my surprise after reading of the critcial panning this film received on release I found it to be a very handsomely mounted and spicy version of this often filmed fable far from the difficulty that I was led to have. Ralph Bates makes a highly honorable Frankenstein in my opinion and portrays the Baron as a grand darker individual than audiences perhaps were accustomed to seeing in earlier versions. Bates’ Baron has few redeeming character traits and hides his detestable nature under a debonair facade that makes for an though-provoking interpretation of the character.

This version of the chronicle takes us befriend to Frankestein’s youth where even at a young age the young nobleman’s self confidence and arrogance allows him to outsmart his teachers and in the case of one (Geoffrey Lumsden), he succeeds in convincing him that he is ill thus avoiding a punishment. Returning home to Castle Frankenstein believing he can learn more with his acquire research Vicot comes into conflict with his dissolute father the Baron (George Belbin), who keeps him on a tight rein financially. Victor decides to steal matters into his bear hands to pick up his inheritance ahead of time and arranges for one of th eBaron’s hunting rifles to befriend fire thus clearing the arrangement for Victor to become Baron Frankenstein and initiate enjoying all th epleasures of th eposition which include the handsome servant Alys (Kate O’Mara), who had also shared his father’s bed. Victor sets up an define lab in the Castle and with the attend of his friend Wilhelm (Graham Jones), he begins some rathe runusual experiements on life starting first with a turtle and then graduating to experimenting on creating a human. Wilhelm is revolted by Victor’s collecting of human body parts courtesy of the local grave robber (Dennis Sign), and when he threatens to exhibit Victor he is murderd by his veteran friend who uses his hands in the creation of his creature. Childhood friend Elizabeth Heiss (Veronica Carlson), who level-headed is in like with Victor comes benefit into his life however Victor decides that Elizabeth’s father has the sort of brain he needs for his experiments and continues his killing spree by first poisoning him and when the graverobber has delivered the “item”, to Victor he also suffers a contemptible fate when Victor dumps him in a tank of acid. The creature is now complete and during an electrical storm Victor manages to bring it to life however it is not the placid creature expected but a murderous monster. Doing Victor’s bidding for him the creature first kills Alys and the grave robbers wife who are suspecting that Victor is responsible for the earlier murders breaks but then breaks loose and goes on a rampage. Attacking Elizabeth aid at the Castle Victor hides the monster in the empty acid tank but when the police along with some of the fearful villagers near one of the dinky girls accidently pulls the rope that fills the tank with acid thus destroying forever Victor’s man made monster.

Viewers expecting a classic version of the Frankenstein narrative such as was seen in the Boris Karloff trilogy help in the 1930’s are liable to be disappointed with “Terror of Frankenstein”, however there is great to savor in this updated legend. Hammer Studios always had a arrangement of creating great looking productions out of little budgets and while this film does at times hiss some short cuts they are not ones that detract from the yarn. Ralph Bates, stepping into the shoes of the legendary Peter Cushing certainly had his work crop out for him here however he does a more than great job in his one outing in this distinguished role. His Victor Frankenstein is all charm and noble looks on the surface which hides a very gross and wrong character underneath that cares for neither family or friends. Ralph Bates was an extremely talented actor who was being groomed at this time for greater things with Hammer Productions unprejudiced as their prolific output of scare efforts was slowing down. His combination of obliging looks, and talent for playing characters that were both beneficial and dreadful made him a natural for these type of fear stories. The supporting actors surrounding Bates in this anguish couldn’t be faulted and describe a attractive school of performers that were typical of these leisurely Hammer era productions. Actress Veronica Carlson had already appeared in one of the earlier Peter Cushing Frankenstein efforts for Hammer, “Frankenstein Must Be Destroyed!”, when she came on board here playing the role of Elizabeth Heiss, Baron Frankenstein’s childhood friend who level-headed carries a flame for him. Kate O’Mara really shines in the role of the seductive servant Alys who gets more than she bargains for when she tries to play Victor Frankenstein at his occupy game for which she pays dearly. Being a fable about creating a human being out of obsolete body parts obviously means that grave robbers would naturally feature prominently in the yarn. Here Dennis Tag as the hard drinking grave robber of this fable who supplies Victor with the corpses he needs for his “work”, delivers an at times comic perfomance and his scenes with his wife (Joan Rice), have a distinct amount of macabre humour to them. Their best scene togethe ris when they are disturbing the novel graves in the cemetary and the gentleman gets his terrible wife to do the proper digging while he discusses the fortune they will do from a reported tragedy at sea that finds bodies being washed ashore along the sail! Jon Finch as Victor’s childhood friend Lt. Becker who leads the investigation into the deaths and Bernard Archard as Elizabeth’s father who becomes Victor’s prey when a novel brain is needed also procure well in their respective parts. Worthy debate has always arisen over David Prowse as the Monster. Certainly his creature could never compete in appearance or personality with Boris Karloff’s classic interpretation of the character however with each screening of “Anxiety of Frankenstein”, I feel he makes an acceptable creature in his enjoy legal if you dont try and compare him to Karloff. Certainly his scenes where he is trying to demolish loose from his chains or is wandering around the countryside striking dread into the locals or tearing apart a bird to eat raw have their believe horrific qualities. Visually “Apprehension of Frankenstein”, could afford to be more explicit than many of the earlier versions given the year it was made. This is best illustrated in the evil scenes when Victor is assembling the creature from sawn off body parts and when he wipes his face with blood covered hands during the “operation”, which gives this film a far more raw quality than in previous Hammer efforts. Period detail in all respects is certainly a strong point of “Panic of Frankenstein”, with the lovely Victorian atmosphere well represented in costume and sets. Frankenstein’s lab where he conducts his experiments is one that we have advance to interrogate from Hammer Productions filled as it is with bubbling containers, test tubes and assorted wires, in short the classic excited scientist’s lab in smart colour.

While it certainly is not the best Hammer version of the frankenstein sage “Apprehension of Frankenstein”, is also not the shoddy worry so often dismissed by the critics. Ralph Bates creates a quite different and spellbinding Baron Frankenstein here that really does believe your interest. Often criticised for being uninteresting gripping in particular in the first half of the film I feel that is important in letting us know a bit more about Frankenstein’s character and what is motivating him to conduct such experiments that have him resorting to destroy to effect his aims. “Fear of Frankenstein”, is an curious slant on the classic record and any fans of classic anxiety characters and Hammer Productions interpretation of them in general will want to include this version in their collection. Bask In!

I guess this movie really should’ve had only 3 stars, but I give it 4 because after all the unpleasant things I’d heard about it, it’s a noble surprise. O.k., it may not be scary, but no one watches early 70’s Hammer to be insecure, anyway. -Same sets, same atmosphere, etc. This movie is more of a comedy. The cast is the pleasant thing about this film. Bates, in his largest role for Hammer, is incredible. He’s brilliantly arrogant as Frankenstein; clearly enjoying the fragment. it also features a pre-”Frenzy” Jon Finch. The baron isn’t caught in the raze, revealing that Hammer wanted to invent more Frankensteins with Bates, but since the film flopped this notion was unfortunately dropped. It would’ve been lively to see; it couldn’t possibly have turned out worse than remarkable of the studio’s later stuff. (P.S.-only downer: this tape is in the damn EP mode.)

I old-fashioned to jabber Holocaust history for about 8 years at the high school level, and have not only read many books on the subject but also watched numerous films on the genre. This 1978 mini-series is in my view, one of the best depictions of the Holocaust on shroud.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Holocaust! Click Here

The series is residence in Germany true about the time Adolf Hitler and the Nazi party are in power [the period covered is about 1935-45]. The series focusses on the trials of the Weiss family, a prominent Jewish family with the patriarch being a decorated war stale, a grandmother, two sons, Dr Josef Weiss [Fritz Weaver] and his wife Berta [Rosemary Harris], a pharmacist Moses Weiss [Sam Wanamaker], and three grandchildren, an artist Karl [James Woods], a rebel Rudi [Joseph Bottoms], and young Anna.

The series begins with the celebration of the marriage between Karl [James Woods] and his Aryan wife Inga [Meryl Streep]. The Weiss report the assimilated Jewish family, they are not particularly religious yet proud to be Jewish, and are at ease with their Gentile friends. Yet, gloomy clouds are starting to come by over them and the rest of Germany’s Jews as the Nazi party’s anti-semitic policies are about to be save into action. It begins with tiny things like Dr Josef Weiss not being able to treat his Aryan patients anymore and things pick up worse from that point on. Kristallnacht [Night of the Broken Glass] sees the destruction of Jewish property and businesses and worse is to approach.

The series tries to describe the slack persecution of the Jews before the escalation into the dread that became the Shoah. Dr Weiss is deported to Poland, where he ends up with his brother Moses in the Warsaw Ghetto. The other members of the family are also to suffer as Karl the artist is sent off to a concentration camp, leaving his wife Inga desperate to hear news of him. Rudi leaves home to join the partisans, and his mother and sister are left to fend for themselves.

There are some truly horrifying scenes in this series and may not be top-notch for younger viewers. Mass kill, such as Jews being burned alive, the Babi Yar Massacre in the Ukraine, and of course the gassings are all portrayed with a high degree of realism that makes one flinch and grieve at the same time for all the innocent lives lost.

The series not only focusses on the Weiss family, for there is a parallel storyline piquant a German named Erik Dorff [Michael Moriarty], an unemployed lawyer who at the behest of his wife decides to join the foul SS, reporting directly to Reinhard Heydrich[ David Warner], the blond beast who was responsible for implementing many of Hitler’s sadistic policies against the Jews. We stare how Erik keeps justifying the slay of innocents ["We must withhold killing them, don't you scrutinize? If we discontinuance it's an admission of guilt!], and how he turns out to be such a cold-blooded human with no feelings whatsoever [a brief attack of conscience is soon forgotten]. This is very reminiscent of many of the high-ranking SS officers in history, as Rudolf Hoss, the Commandant of Auschwitz himself remained unrepentant till the ruin.

I am very gratified that this fabulous series of such principal historic significance is to be finally made available on DVD and i hope that it will characterize the series in its entirety with preferably added features such as interviews with the cast etc. A must-have for anyone eager in the Holocaust!

UPDATE: The DVD site contains 3 discs, and is NR. It runs approx. 7 hrs and 29 mins. When I compared my powerful veteran out VHS version with the DVD plot, I did eye some missing scenes. I’m not distinct why this is so. Another customer actually commented that up to an hour of the novel demonstrate is missing [? ]. Once again, I’m not clear as to the justification for this. Also, there are no bonus features which is a disappointment considering this is the 30 year Anniversary edition. It would have been nice to have some interviews with cast members, the director, producer, even a Making Of segment. The quality of the portray transfer is average. However, despite these flaws, and considering the fact that it has taken 3 decades for this myth mini-series to be released on DVD, I would detached recommend “Holocaust” as a must-watch for those keen in the genre.
